Mid America Petfood manufacturing recalls over 35 formulas for Salmonella

The US FDA has initiated a recall of a number of dog food formulas by Victor, Waynes Feeds, Eagle Mountain Petfoods and Members Mark. Mid America pet food manufacturing is a co packing facility in Mount Pleasant Texas that manufactures foods for dozens of pet food companies.  The recall was initiated by the FDA with collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control(CDC) after 7 cases of Salmonella Kiambu.  As of November 1st, seven people from seven different states have reported being hospitalized from the infection.  The initial cases were in children who had handled the product.  Five of the seven cases reported being fed to dogs and three reported feeding Victor pet food specifically.  No deaths from the illnesses have been reported.  Terrible news for Mid America and companies manufacturing through their facility.

Retail samples of Victor Hi Pro plus dry food were collected from retailers by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture and were analyzed and matched the strain of Salmonella found in the seven human cases.  The investigation is ongoing.  Salmonella poisoning can easily occur from handling the affected product.  Thorough washing of your hands is critical. Common symptoms of Salmonella poisoning are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever.  Pets may show similar symptoms.

At the facility that produces the Canine Health Forward line of kibble products, there is a lengthy testing process for bacteria such as Salmonella.  During the manufacturing process samples are taken every 15 minutes.  At the end of manufacturing these samples are tested not only three times by our facilities’ in-house laboratory.  In addition to the testing, these samples are split and sent to not one but two different independent laboratories.  Only after passing all of these tests will a Lot # be released for shipping from the plant.  In 45 years of manufacturing, Canine Health Forwards manufacturing facility has yet to have recalls of any type.
